The Bark Shack

Whittling for Fun

Welcome to the Bark Shack

The Bark Shack you ask? Well it comes from the very place that boredom first inspired a scene carved in bark.

Once upon a time I worked (still do) for a paper company that uses wood chips to make tissue paper. To make a short story longer, one part of the process strips the bark off of timber used for making pulp. This bark is then conveyed to a boiler and burned as fuel. When more bark is being produced than burned, it is piled in a storage yard to be reclaimed when shortages in production occur; which is where my story starts.

One night, on the third shift, the bark production and consumption were matched perfectly which left me with very little to do. After completing all of the busy work I could find, I happened on a large slab of pine bark. Being a whittler and finding myself with time to enjoy it, I started working on the slab with a pocket knife.

The awesome character inside this slab of bark was amazing. Common shapes began appearing from each layer. One of the pieces that came off of the bark looked just like a full sized piece of lumber. That began the project of carving out enough pieces of lumber to build a miniature building. Using wood glue to connect different layers opened up so many possibilities that pretty soon I was totally hooked.

Ye Ole Well

This miniature started out as a bucket, and ended up being a well house. If you look close, you can see the bucket inside the well house.
